ELMEX was founded in Japan in July 1986 and is mainly engaged in the research, development and production of bio-machinery.
Over the past two decades, the company has continuously developed a series of testing products such as machinery, reagents, rapid environmental testing products, and analytical devices equipped with information systems to meet the needs of the food hygiene inspection market. Lecturers Ichiro Sato and Takashi Yamazaki, Assistant Professor Areshakhni Muhammad Mahdi, Adjunct Lecturer Yayoi Nishiyama, and Koichi Makimura, Deputy Director of the Medical Mycology Research Center at Teikyo University, analyzed the temporal changes in the fungal flora of the Japanese Experimental Module (Note) over the seven years since its inception. They found that human-derived fungi were the dominant species on Kibo. Furthermore, while fungal populations on equipment surfaces were increasing, the air purifier was operating normally, resulting in no viable fungi in the cultures. For these reasons, regular cleaning and microbial inspections are considered effective methods for maintaining astronaut health.
